What
are student meetings and what
happend in the past ? Twice a year music
therapy students form all over
Europe
meet each other to get in contact, share experiences, talk about
differences in the approaches, to make a lot of music and not at least
to enjoy a wonderful weekend together.
The meetings take place at a university and are organized by people
studying there.
On the arriving-friday every school presentates itself in a creative
way followed by party, music, finding new and old friends and ... party
! On saturday you can join many workshops about
music
therapy related topics. And then ? Right : party !!!
On sunday is the sad saying goodbye : changing of adresses, jamming one
more time all togehter and travelling a long way home looking forward
to the next meeting. Here you can find a look
back to passed student
meetings.

Vitoria, Spain - July 2 - 4, 2005
There were only 5 participants on this meeting,
which is
quite sad. What they experienced (having a good time never the less!)
and what thoughts they'd like to share you can read here!
Leuven, Belgium - November 12 -
14, 2004 There was another student
meeting in November this
year!
So we decided to travel there, to see the city, the students and to
hear some of their knowledge. The workshops were of a great standard,
with something for everybody. There was dancing, playing, improvising,
learning and some meditation for us. Next to the workshops there was
lots to do. There were many games in every free moment, and even a
great game-show on saturdaynight! This weekend was
a good example for all of us to
see how
an organization can make fantastic weekend for European students.
Unfortunately, there were not that many students in Leuven, in
comparison to the previous weekends, where there had always been up to
100 students! It might have to do with the fact that many European
students are waiting for Spain in July, or with the fact that some
schools only found out about the weekend just a few weeks in advance.
It shows how important our contact persons are,
and that
they really do have a big task in organizing the weekends. Without
them, there will be no weekends! So, I would like to thank all the
contactpersons in spreading the word for us! Please make sure that in
your school, someone is contactperson, and that this person is known to
be so by the EAMTS and of course in your school! The
EAMTS decided that this time we would do an evaluation
of the weekend among all the students who were there. We had
discussions about the role of the EAMTS in the weekends. There is a
line between helping organizing the weekends, and being involved in
organizational parts of it, and helping the students to get some more
funding, and in moments of chaos helping them. The EAMTS has decided
the following: We won’t be actively involved in
organizing the
weekends. We will help where possible, but we won’t take over
commissions of the organization. What we will do is
try to keep eye on the standard
of
the weekends. How are the workshops? In what language does everybody
feel happy? How much will the weekend cost? In order to know all these
things, we will evaluate the weekends, make reports out of it and we
will make a rotating map, with these evaluations from us and with the
evaluation and reports from the organization. This map will be given to
the next organization. The Leuven
evaluation
was very positive, I think everybody agreed that the weekend was very
well-organised! People were feeling welcome, Leuven was a great city
and we all enjoyed the Kot-madame on the market square. Even though
there was only a small group of students, there had been a very high
score in the evaluation!
Or maybe it was because of the intimacy of the group that the weekend
was such a big success! The EAMTS gave their
presentation about the
Bosnia-project, and the students were very interested! For us it was
very nice to see how the students responded. We had a great time in
Mostar, but it’s always nice to hear from others when they
see
the film. Anyway, the next meeting will be in
Spain, from
the 2nd to the 4th of July 2005. Hope to see all of you there!

Siegen, Germany - May 14-16, 2004
You can find a report (unfortunately only
available in German) and nice pictures on the student
pages from Siegen. Vienna,
Austria - November 14-16, 2003 In
mid-November 2003, 80 music therapy students
from several European countries met up with their Austrian colleagues
at the
Viennese University of Music and Performing Arts
and over the course of three days attended workshops, compared their
experiences in the field and intensified the relationships between
individual schools. Railway services were on
strike. After weeks and
months
of anticipation and intense planning, there was turmoil and turbulence
for a short time when nearly one-hundred music therapy students tried
to make their way to Vienna. But eventually more
than eighty guests from the
Netherlands, Germany, Spain and Belgium managed to attend the musical
opening of the semi-yearly meeting on Friday evening: as a kick-off,
Claudia Kettenbach got everybody going with subtle simple songs.
Afterwards came the musical presentations of each school - inventive as
usual. Equally music-oriented were many of the
workshops
taking
place all day at Saturday. Other aspects of activity were movement and
body-awareness, tips and information for job-beginners, construction of
musical instruments and specific topics related to music therapy. A
special hands-on experience was provided by Elena Fitzthum who
presented all participants with an element from the field of sensitive
awareness. Night
life in Vienna included tours to the
Christmas
market and a specially organised party at the TÜWI on Saturday
night: dumplings and curry, beer and wine, music provided by the bands
"ghandi´s eye" and "God bless the aircondition" all
contributed
to high spirits, so that many didn´t arrive at the flats of
the
hosting Viennese students until the wee hours of the morning.
For roughly two years now, the gathering of the
European
Association of Music Therapy Students (EAMTS) is an integral part of
the student meetings. Agenda items discussed on Sunday morning in
Vienna were initiatives to establish a practical music therapy
placement in Bosnia and the first-time participation of students at the
forthcoming European Music Therapy Congress in Finland (June 2004).
Insight into recent developments in the German Association of Music
Therapy (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Musiktherapie, DGMT) were
also
delivered by their representative. As a
conclusion to the meeting, Karin Schumacher
presented the traditional lecture of the meeting. Her speech looked
into the subject "Music Therapy. What can be taught - what can be
learned?". As a Viennese graduate with thirty years of experience in
practice, teaching and research she was able to convey much of her
comprehensive knowledge, her music therapeutic attitude and her
enthusiasm. For
the summer semester 2004, the Viennese music
therapy
students hand on the role of the hosting school: the next meeting (May
14-16, 2004) will take place in Siegen, Germany.
