08 06 2008 Just a few weeks and the WCMT of 2008 will start The World Congress of Music Therapy in Argentina during the 22th till the 26th of July will become great. The program is available and the first student paper of the EAMTS will happen! I am very happy to tell you that Carole Clarke will present their thesis during the 'EAMTS Student Paper'. Carole
Clarke will graduate from the Queen Margaret University in Edingburgh
with the MSc in Music Therapy (Nordoff-Robbins) in July 2008. She
combines music therapy training with professional singing and raising
her two childeren. Carole Clarke will tell us about her research. This describes the studentexperience of vocalising while training to become a music therapist. It deals
with themes of learning, identity, and change, and investigates the voice as a
vehicle for expressing powerful emotions and container for experiential
learning. This presentation seems very fascinating to me. Besides
these presentation, I (Sabine van Zanten) will present a paper about
the EAMTS (their seminaries, projects, internships and research
exchanges) on behalf of the EAMTS.
All together, seeing the program: the WCMT seems to be very exciting and fascinating! I am looking forward to it and as soon as we will be back, you will read a report about it, here.

12th World Congress
of
Music Therapy in Argentina Dear interested
people, after
a very successful participation at the last European Congress in 2004
and 2007 the EAMTS is again organising a symposia or afternoon where
students are invited to speak about their research or a special
internship experience or case study during the 12th World Congress of
Music Therapy in Argentina. This will be from the 22th till the 26th of
July 2008 and it will be the first time a student symposium will be
organized. Sometimes
students
are a bit shy and think their research is not worth yet to be
presented. But thats where we want to encourage them to pratice in
speaking at international congresses. Possibly
you know people who have
done some
interesting resea rch or have had fascinating experiences and it might
be even yourself, who I am talking about. Then you
are the people I am
(and the EAMTS is)
looking for! Download the
invitation For further
information you (or they) can contact us at conference@eamts.org.
For upcomming information please visit the EAMTS-Homepage again, or visit the website of the World Congress. We
would be very grateful for your help and looking
forward to hear from you (or people you know)! The

European Musictherapy Congress 2007 in Eindhoven
After
rich experiences
in 2004 during the congress in Finland, this summer the European
Congress took place in the Netherlands. Again the EAMTS cooperated
with the organising committee to arrange a student symposium where
students have the possibility to present their work. There was a
quantity of 66 students from universities in Israel, Canada, England,
Belgium, The Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Spain and Italy.
Report by
Jantina Bijpost (The
Netherlands) – EAMTS Conference- and
Project-commission 22-08-07
Because
students paid half the price of what a music therapist had to pay, we
stayed in a separate accommodation situated in a nice forest. It was
called ‘the castle’
which was about 800 meters from the congress building. We slept with
8 or 12 people in one room and we made our own breakfast. It was very
homey and close to a nice forest. The lunches and diners at the
congress building were very nice and that for half the price!
Why
do I begin to write about the accommodation? Because the first thing
that comes to my mind when I think back is that it felt like I was
not in my own country. There were people from so many countries and
only forest around us. It was like a big treasure of information. I
felt like I almost learned more in 3 days then in my whole study of
music therapy (I have to be careful with these words). Every morning
the day started with keynote lectures from very interesting speakers
like Karin Schumacher and Henk Smeijsters. The rest of the day there
were lectures from well known music therapists and young music
therapists about research, clinical practice and music therapy
theory. Besides the lectures, where you learn from listening and
thinking, there were also workshops which were more active and
focussed on experiencing the process yourself.
 (Picture:
the speakers in the Student Symposium + EAMTS representatives)
In
the Student-symposium we had very interesting lectures from Chris
Lykkegaard (Denmark), Sabine van Zanten (the Netherlands), Ian Spink
(England) and Eszter Forgács (England / Hungary).
Unfortunately there was not a big number of people coming and
listening to the student’s lectures. We hoped for more support from
the students and music therapists with this but I think it’s
probably because it was on a Saturday afternoon where many people
were tired. The ones who did come were very enthusiastic and inspired
by the lectures.
Next to
the student-symposium the EAMTS had
an information desk where people could read and talk about the EAMTS
services like the INEX-commission and our projects. Now more people
know about the aims of the EAMTS and some music therapists showed
their interest because they have clinical and research-internships
for students. Some students became a member and others were
interested in being
informed about the
EAMTS-projects. We are also happy to let you know that we have our
first Italian members!
Every
evening, after an
enriching and full day, there was the evening programme with concerts
for instance by the Dutch band ‘sunshield’ leaded by Albert
Berman and ‘Ragnarock’ leaded by Tom Neass all the way from
Norway. Also other musicians played lovely music and on the last
evening there was a musical play by ‘Radio Ping Pong’ from
Belgium. After all: What’s a music therapy congress without music?
On
behalf of the EAMTS I would like to thank the organising committee
for cooperating with the EAMTS and provide facilities for the
students. Many dialogues happened at this congress that inspired me
professionally and personally (how appropriate, that the theme of
this year was ‘Dialogues in Music Therapy’).
I would
also like to thank all
students who came to this congress and share this great experience
with us. I would like to ask them to stimulate others to go to next
congresses. I would also like to use this opportunity, where I write
this article for our EAMTS members, to inspire students to come to
the next (European) Congress. The next European Congress will
probably be in 2009 ‘somewhere in the south of Europe’ but that’s
still a surprise. The next World Congress will be in Buenos Aires –
Argentina. A member of the organising committee, Gabriella Wagner was
also interested in a student symposium there and discounts for
students.
The
reason why you should come is of
course to attend the various aspects of the music therapy practice
around the world and to share new research and knowledge in the field
of music therapy. But above all it is great to meet the most driven
and passionate music therapists in the world. And driven they were,
because they came all the way to Holland for 3 days!
Dear
students: once again: If
you are exited to learn and share more about music therapy, want to
do some networking already during your studies, like to meet other
cultures and want to help promoting international exchange of music
therapists and students? Go to the upcoming congresses! (And join the
EAMTS and her services of course!)
20 01 2007 7th European Music Therapy Congress
“Dialogues in Music
Therapy” The
next European Music Therapy Congress will take place in The Netherlands
in August 2007. Like
2004 in Finland the EAMTS will be organising a student symposia at this
Congress. Students should get the chance to speak about their thesis or
about some projects they did.
In order to support students participation at this congress the EAMTS
will
try to get lower fees for members and will help students with finding
cheap accommodation. For

6th
European Music
Therapy Congress June 16-20 2004 Jyväskylä,
Finland
We had been given a student symposium
at the 6th
European Music Therapy Congress in Finland. In previous congresses, not
much attention has been paid to students and our needs. So this was an
exciting breakthrough. Therefore we invited students who were
interested to use this opportunity to talk about their thesis,
experiences or projects at this symposium and made a call for papers.
Report by Brechtje
Hallo and
Robbie van Alphen Early
Monday morning we drove of to Frankfurt-Hahn to catch our flight which
would bring us to Tampere International Airport. Our courageous plan
was to hitch hike all the way to Jyväskylä which was
about
150km.
After waiting half an hour at the airport we decided to walk because
the parking lot was empty. At the first crossroad we decided to wait.
The first women who picked us up welcomed us with the lovely words:
"Please don't kill me. I am a mother of four."
After several other travels we met the board on a nice campsite in
Jyväskylä. Everybody was very exited on Tuesday.
Not only
because
we all were there but of the big soccer match: "Netherlands-Germany".
For the most because the board was divided between these countries.
On Wednesday the real excitement began
when Aino
Sallinen director of the University of Jyväskylä
officially
opened the Congress. The EAMTS was mentioned in
the opening speech of Jos de Backer, the president of the EMTC, which
was a big honour for the EAMTS. That night we received our first
keynote by Kimo Lehtonen. His keynote was about music as document of
meaningful life experiences. The following days
were filled with
keynotes,
paper
sessions, workshops, lectures, poster sessions and symposia. Because it
would be far too much to put abstracts of these presentations in this
report we choose only to talk about our symposium. If you would like to
know more about the conference use this
link or reach us on the forum.
The
Student Symposium Thursday
we had our student symposium
chaired by
Verena
Heidenreich and Robbie van Alphen. During our symposium we had two
speakers. The first was Patricia Altieri Ramírez from
Heidelberg, Germany. She talked about Music and Imagination -
Development of a Treatment Concept for Breast Cancer Patients. The link
to the abstract of her presentation will follow.
The second speaker was Helle Mumm from Denmark who has worked in Mostar
for 13 months. She presented her views about various experience from
music therapy work. One of the things she showed was a video made by
the Pavarotti Centre in Mostar about their work. To read more about
Mostar and Bosnia-Herzegovina go to projects. After
the break the Board organized a
discussion
about
"Closing the Gap". Present were students as well as professionals and
people who were in the gap.
We discussed and acknowledged the gap from different sites. There
is an existing gap between students and professionals and it's also
recognised by both sites. One of the surprising things coming up from
this discussion was that professionals also experienced a gap between
them and other international music therapist.
The student symposium was a big success and was very thankful for all
the board members, students and professionals present. After
four long days of networking,
following
workshops,
lectures, paper sessions etc. etc. we were very tired but really
satisfied. As you might have noticed the EAMTS is On
the Move! On Sunday evening we, Brechtje
and I,
started
hitch
hiking back to Tampere International Airport and Monday we were finally
home.
